Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell updated council and the public on the twin issues of Citizens Assembly/municipal amalgamation and a regional police force in his annual address on a variety of topics on Feb. 5. You’ll find the meeting video HERE  – go to “Mayor’s Annual Address” and his comments about amalgamation/regional police start at 19:35.

Saanich council voted unanimously on Jan. 8 in favour of a motion that calls on the BC government “to establish and fund a Citizens Assembly on Amalgamation with interested municipalities.” Three days later Victoria council followed suit approving the same motion with only Coun. Ben Isitt dissenting.

Mayor Atwell told council he has asked Municipal Affairs Minister Selina Robinson for a meeting.

Saanich council also said it is receptive to the creation of a “regional police force” (its phrase) and Victoria council voiced support using the phrase “regional police service.” Mayor Atwell expanded on this on Feb. 5.
