BUT RECOMMENDS SOME CHANGES

by Roger Stonebanks, citizen reporter

The Saanich Advisory Design Panel has approved plans for a new shopping centre/condos in Cordova Bay – but with recommendations for some changes.

Next step in the public municipal process will be council consideration at committee of the whole at a later date. There will be no public hearing because the application is for an amended Development Permit – not for rezoning. The plan meets the current zoning bylaw and does not require variances. Council’s consideration will be limited to the plan’s “form and character and applicable design guidelines.”

The plan to replace Cordova Bay Plaza includes 86 condos, shops, a bank and a supermarket more than twice the size of the old grocery. It is opposed by the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs and the Cordova Bay Village Vision Group.

A motion to approve the plan as it was presented was defeated by the Advisory Design Panel in a tied vote. A qualified approval – approved but subject to certain recommendations – was then agreed.
